A quest to break a human powered speed record around BC’s biggest island.
Join Colin Angus as he shares his recent record-breaking voyage around Vancouver Island in a rowboat. Over the course of 15.5 days he rowed 1100 km through some of the most challenging waters on the west coast in a home-made self-designed boat. While physically gruelling, the journey also revealed some of the most spectacular scenery in Canada; fractured cliffs massaged by exploding waves, wind-sculpted trees, and tiny forgotten islets bearing remains of early pioneers.
Colin describes the wildlife as prolific – puffins, whales, dolphins, otters, seals, muskrats, and numerous bears kept him company much of the time. Sea conditions ranged from glassy calm to gale-ravaged mountains of breaking water. This is a story combining the beauty of the west coast with the tenacity and perseverance required to reach a personal goal.
Colin will also briefly be discussing the latest National Geographic Expedition he just completed with his wife, Julie Angus, and their 10 month old son. Over the course of four months they sailed the Mediterranean researching the olive, the humble fruit that changed the world.

Colin Angus completed the first human-powered circumnavigation of the world when in 2006 he cycled into Vancouver after 43,000 km of travel. During the course of two years he rowed across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, trekked and cycled through 16 countries, endured winter in Siberia and searing heat in the tropics.
Colin has made a career exploring remote parts of the world and sharing his adventures through bestselling books, films and presentations. He has navigated the Amazon and Yenisey Rivers from source to sea, sailed the South Pacific Ocean, and rowed thousands of km in waterways around the world. He has co-produced four documentaries which collectively won ten awards at international festivals including the Dijon and Telluride Festivals of Adventure Films. His work is published in numerous publications including the Globe and Mail, Reader’s Digest and Cruising World.
Outside Magazine listed Colin as one of the top 25 “bold visionaries with world changing dreams” for his work in promoting lifestyle changes to help the environment. In 2006 Colin was jointly awarded the Adventurer of the Year Award with his wife, Julie. Colin and Julie continue their efforts in promoting zero-emissions transportation as a healthy way to maintain a healthy world.
