The Autonomous Atlantic Crossing showcases technological innovation, environmental stewardship, and the challenges of ocean voyages. Our educational program provides free online curriculum for classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Learning Goals
The teaching plans are designed around three broad learning goals. The plans combine offline activities with online interaction and encourage young people to:
- Explore how technology changes our ability to understand and observe the world around us.
- Participate in ocean observations that allow us to monitor climate change, weather patterns and key oceanographic variables.
- Discover how ocean voyages have changed over the 1,000 years since the Vikings first crossed the Atlantic Ocean and settled in places like L’Anse aux Meadows, where our boat will begin its voyage.
Classroom Visits and Virtual Interaction
Students will have the opportunity to participate in boat testing, sea trials, oceanographic monitoring and other preparations through live streaming virtual classrooms. Schools in communities along the route of the Canadian tour from Victoria to Newfoundland will also have the opportunity for a classroom visit by one of our educators and will be able to examine the autonomous boat.
