Rowed Trip - Scotland to Syria by Oar

In September 2008, Julie and Colin Angus completed a 7 month, 7,000 km journey from the northern tip of Scotland to the heart of Syria using exclusively human-powered amphibious rowboats.

The rowboats were specially designed and constructed for the expedition, and each vessel was fitted with a bicycle and trailer that allowed it to travel not only on water but also on land. Their course followed ancient transportation corridors traditionally used for trade and migration, navigating rivers, oceans, coastlines, roads, and canals in an interconnected route through thirteen countries. This enabled the team to experience and learn about the rich cultural tapestry that comprises Europe and the Middle East in a manner that promotes environmentally responsible travel as with their previous expeditions.

Connecting Scotland and Syria with a human-powered voyage also has a personal significance for the team.  Colin’s mother and father both hail from northern Scotland and Julie’s father is from Syria, and the journey allowed the couple to explore their family history.  In an age where globalization and cultural integration is the norm, it enabled the duo to reflect on their origins and unravel the events that led to their union in western Canada. 57 Minutes

Beyond the Horizon

Colin Angus and his wife-to-be, Julie Wafaei, circle the world in a 43,000 km journey by rowboat, bicycle, foot and ski, completing what Outside Magazine and many others have called "one of the last great expeditions" - the first human powered circumnavigation.

In June 2004, the Canadian team left from Vancouver on a two year odyssey that included rowing across 2 oceans, trekking over 3 continents, and exploring 17 countries. They managed the first rowboat crossing of the Bering Sea, travelled through the coldest lands outside of Antarctica, and trekked alongside Nomadic reindeer herders.

For 5 months they rowed unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, enduring 4 cyclones during the worst hurricane season in recorded history, to complete their 10,000 km ocean crossing, making Julie the first woman to row across the Atlantic from mainland to mainland and the first Canadian woman to row across any ocean.

The goal of their expedition was to show just how far non-motorized transportation can take you and to promote no or low emission transportation as an alternative to reduce green house gas emissions to combat climate change.

For their achievements, they jointly received the Adventurer of the Year Award from National Geographic Adventure. 55 Minutes

Yenisey: River of Extremes
The first ever descent, from source to sea, of the 5540 kilometre Yenisey River, set against a backdrop of fairytale cultures and forbidding wilderness.

The Yenisey River is born in the heart of Mongolia and flows north, through Siberia, and on the the Arctic Ocean. It is the fifth longest river on the planet , and at the arrival of the new millennium no one had ever navigated its entirety.

Colin, along with his adventuring friends, Ben Kozel, Remy Quinter and Tim Cope, endeavored to be the first to run the Yenisey. The 5,540 km river is frozen for more than half the year, so the small team would have just a five month window to accomplish this feat.

Dramatic footage captures their successful journey and provides an intimate perspective of a frozen nation emerging from the collapse of communism.  59 Minutes

Amazon From Source to Sea

The Amazon River begins as a maelstrom of whitewater high up in the Andes Mountains. From eighteen thousand feet, it cascades down to the Amazon Basin below, traveling through deep fractured canyons and lush jungle until 7,200 km later it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1999 a small multi-national team,Colin Angus of Canada, Ben Kozel of Australia, and Scott Borthwick of South Africa, set out to run the full length of the world's mightiest river. They were shot at by Shining Path Guerillas, nearly died of thirst in the desert, and repeatedly capsized in adrenaline pounding rapids. After five months they reached the Atlantic coast, becoming the third team to travel the Amazon's length and the first to raft it.

Their dramatic footage captures the beauty and terror of a journey through a majestic but dangerous land.  46 Minutes
